Reflexion

In this class I learned that language of the world has a great history and that knowing how it has changed our life is very important. Knowing as we have progressed over time helps us to realize that things will change and we will adapt to the new, plus I have learned to improve my English writing. English class has been very good, I feel that the content we've seen have been very helpful and now most of the history of English around the world that my own mother tongue. I think that other types of activities that we could do are some related to music or something that has more “action” for examples games.  Well I think that this class is very good and I like it.

Comparative Commentary between "The Soldier" and "Colonization in Reverse"

What thinks a soldier about to die? And what if England had been colonized and not colonizer? These questions could be answered with the poems "The Soldier" and "Colonization in Reverse". The first written in 1914 by Rupert Brooke, a writer of English origin, at the beginning of the First World War and later published after the author's death in 1915. Louise Bennett, a writer of Jamaican origin, writes the second letter on 1966. Between this two letters are various differences such as tone, imagery and form of writing but there are also similarities such as the use of a country, England. And now an analysis of the key aspects will be made to help the better understanding of these texts.

Beginning with the fact that both texts are poems, however one "The Soldier", including
it’s special name, it is a sonnet. The sonnets have the characteristic of being 14 verses, each of these with 11 syllables. "Colonization in Reverse" has 11 stanzas of 4 verses each one. These peculiarities of writing depend on the author. In the second poem the way it is written helps readability, allowing pauses and therefore a better understanding and assimilation.

The language used in each
one is very different, starting with the fact that in the second text, the English used is different than the normally known or used in countries like Mexico, USA or England; makes use of words like "wat", "Tous" or "Englan” that are not used in American English. In the first text in English is better known, but to understand what the poem means is not simple, there must be a deep reading and consents to realize in fact everything involved in this poem. If we contrast these two facts we can realize that although it is a bit difficult to understand, first poem is easier because of the English used, nevertheless in the second one we have to clarify points for its adequate understanding. One point to note is that although second text has a different English the text is more recent, difference is due to where it was written, Jamaica, in which they talk different languages.

The feelings that are managed differ greatly. In "The Soldier" is felt a longing for the fact of dying far from home, which is England, in an enemy camp without many things that were in country, it shows great patriotism, casting a love for England saying that he recalls sights, sounds, smells of his homeland. In verse 4 it says: "In That rich earth a richer dust concealed" which shows that for a soldier the simple fact that an Englishman was killed elsewhere in fought for their country, he is enriching the soil where he died, which shows
again the great patriotism that a soldier had. Very different feelings are shown in "Colonization in Reverse" in which joy is very noticeable, though the last three stanzas denote anger or resentment against England. The joy shows to be changing the story and be this time the Jamaicans the ones who exceeded and managed to go one step further colonizing a country like England. The irony is also felt, in a verse says, "Oono see da
turnabout?" (Do you see the irony?), the author expresses surprise that this event may be true, as weaker people
managed to handle with a greater country. Denoting these feelings we can realize how the authors create with some words the feelings of people, who saw these two poems contrast greatly.

The image on both poems was a resource well used by
authors. The first text says "Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home "or" Her sights and sounds, dreams happy as her day "in both verses people can imagine a beautiful place, with landscapes that show tranquility and happiness; show England as the perfect place, this helps the reader imagine something amazing and feel the same love The soldier felt for his country. In the second text images shown are of joy and discovery and in following verse:
"What an islan! What a people!
Man an woman, old an young
Jus a pack dem bag an baggage
An turn history upside dung! "
In this verse we can see
the given idea of a start, something new and fantastic that pleases people of Jamaica. The images between the two poems are contrasting, but equally help the reader to interpret and feel more a part of environment in both of them.

Important points, as the fact of not knowing the exact meaning of the word "colonization" in the second text can help many different ways of seeing the poem. You might think that it was a "complete" colonization: culture, arms, people, or you can take the fact that people traveled to England hoping better opportunities and little by little the great migration was “Colonization." And in "The Soldier" we can question if the image we want to show is of a military soldier or a figure "Soldier" is only used to represent any person leaving their country to fight for it in different ways.

With all that we can realize two ways in which you can see a country on the one hand the most beloved country, for
which life is given and on the other hand a country that is finally passed and colonized by those who previously were humiliated and who now seek
something better. Different in writing, on the dates, in images and many things, but equal in the conviction to defend their nation, it can be said that the two poems are nationalistic; they say the best of their country, everyone defending their identity and history. Then I can get to the personal conclusion about the main topic: there can be many loves, but the feels for our country is unique and forever.

The History of the English Language by Lucy Rucker

The English is language to have a great story behind. Has the United States comes from Great Britain, USA and is modified by other languages like Latin and French. This combination and evolution of English helped has to take the kind of English that we have today, as Old English was more difficult to understand and speak, besides the fact that words had no meaning. According to the evolution of this language, meanings, words and pronunciation has changed greatly, however there are still differences between people who speak English in countries where this is the native language. Such as the United States where the language is the same although there are differences in meanings of words between the people of the north and the south.
The main purpose of the article is to show how English has evolved and so do not forget how it has changed not only this language if you cannot compare with the history of other countries, coming to realize like everyone, everywhere has evolved. Because some words, objects, things have become obsolete and others have changed to suit the needs of the contemporary world.
At the beginning of the article writer says “The English language seems to be the more complex of the other languages of the world, in my opinion.” And in my opinion is not to be the most difficult or complex, but like all languages in the world are in constant evolution and change some things from him, depending on where you talk to, no expression that distinguish it. For some people learn or understand the English language can be very complicated, however for others it may make it very easy and sometimes can be expressed much better in this language as their mother tongue.
We can then conclude that English has a history behind it and as many languages has greatly changed, and the importance of the countries speaking this language has become one of the most important languages in the
world. Let's go to where English is not the same, they have different words and ways to use the vocabulary in other places do not have, so it is highly recommended that we build not only wanting to learn American English, if not open up the other forms of speech and expression, while it is good a little more deeply what we are learning in order to know a little what we are saying and whether the way we are saying is correct.

The History of the English Language by Laura Howard

English has a back story that many people do not know, not even some of the people who have English as native language known. Although this language is spoken in many parts of the world, is not the most spoken, this place was won by Mandarin Chinese. The history of English does not begin in England if not in parts of what is now known as Germany, even today there are words that are very similar between the two languages.
Understanding the evolution of English can understand the language divide into different categories;
Old English, Middle English, Early modern English and English today. As stated by the "Old English" began to speak in western Germany and was extended to up to Great Britain. During the "Middle English" English mixed with French. For "Early modern English" were created new words and phrases, plus there was a big change in the pronunciation of words and thanks to the invention of printing English is able to expand further. The "English today" has also suffered several changes as the invention of new words designed for new technology, such as "cyber" word before and did not understand would have no meaning because the technology did not exist now, where is applied that word.
This article explains the history and development of more powerful language today in the world. With intent more than anything people know about the past. It also shows the changes that have occurred in the language have been of great benefit since before the language was a bit more complicated to understand. The article is mostly a historical approach, he wants to do is to report on how language has changed and continues to change and evolve to adapt to life now takes on the world, inventing new words and new things are invented, and become obsolete and many other things that are lost, places, animals.
In my opinion English is and will continue to change because the world does not stop and be aware of the history of a language can help us avoid mistakes and, to use words without meaning or how to improve their pronunciation or grammar. To that English continues to have importance, should continue to improve, and in my view is a language "flexible" that can reinvent itself. For this reason I think is very important to continue learning about the language to be better and "polishing" and thus achieve an excellent way of communicating.

The History of the English Language by Risa

English has a story not as long compared to others is known about this history through ancient documents showing the onset of language. The first to speak "English" were the Angles and Saxons, of who came the name "Englisc" (meaning the language spoken by the Angles). English is part of the West-Germanic Germanic subfamily of Indo-European languages. This language came to England (of the most important today where English is spoken) to the single X. Note that descends from modern English dialect spoken and written in Mercia. The language has changed, mainly in pronunciation and that time has passed under the "accent" or a syllable emphasis has shifted to the right of the word.At the same time that changes the pronunciation of the word, has alsochanged the way of writing, adapting to the pronunciation. Although many English things have changed, the original core remains the same. This change in language because it is a living language and therefore must continue to improve and change, if it would be obsolete and would become a dead language.

The main idea reveals that the article is as English was progressing both geographically and linguistically, it is very interesting to see how and why the English managed to be gaining ground around the world since it was a slow process and in which language underwent major changes to become what it is today.
It also shows how a word has evolved and others that were written in the same way they changed their meaning. It shows the idea that English will continue to evolve and do not know how to succeed as that is English so different today with which to speak in 10 or 15 years.

It is very interesting to see how a language is acquiring power and what was the path followed, the records that have the accent or tone in which they spoke before has changed, if you start thinking the way English is being followed
good or bad, the modification and combination of words, the invention of new words is something which I think gives more life into English, it helps not to stagnate and die. So I think that the way English has continued to grow very large, I'm not sure if for better or for worse because even though the roots are preserved, are becoming less and it would be important to know the past, such items as shows.

What should we learn, English as a lingua franca or "formal" English?

I think that even though English has borrowed a great force and in various parts of the world is very necessary to have a good job, better education and greater opportunities generally think it is important that each country has a great diversity and between the characteristics of this diversity is the language, which must be respected, and if English is implemented as "formal" could lose this diversity of languages has, as they may be forgotten the other existing languages. So in my opinion, English should continue as the choice of second or third language, so that there is a balance between the mother tongue and second or third language (in this case English).
